The weather’s finally getting better, which means one thing: beach trips are BACK! And while there’s genuinely nothing better than sun on your face, sandy toes, and quality time with the family by the coast… we all know how quickly the kids can go from blissfully happy to “Mum, I’m BORED” in about 3.5 minutes. That’s where beach games come in. The good news? We’ve put together a brilliant list of simple games that need zero gear – just willing participants and a bit of imagination. Win-win!
So, grab yourself a cuppa (while it’s still hot!), get comfy, and let’s dive into some brilliant ways to keep everyone entertained on your next coastal adventure!

British Bulldog
Ah, British Bulldog, the classic playground game that probably got banned at your school at some point for being “too rough.” Now, there are LOADS of different versions floating around (everyone seems to have their own house rules!), but here’s one brilliant way to play it on the beach.
How to Play:
1. Pick your Bulldogs
Choose one or two people to stand in the middle – these are your “bulldogs.” If you’ve got a big group, go for two. Smaller group? One’s fine!
2. Mark your territory
Designate your play area with clear boundaries. Use the water’s edge and a line in the sand, or two lines in the sand if you’re playing further up the beach. Make sure everyone knows where the “safe zones” are, so there are no arguments later!
3. The mad dash
Everyone who’s NOT a bulldog lines up in one safe zone. On “GO!”, they sprint to the opposite safe zone without getting tagged by the bulldogs lurking in the middle. Chaos ensues. Kids scream. It’s brilliant.
4. Tag, you’re it!
Once you’re tagged, YOU become a bulldog too! Now you’re hunting your former teammates. The drama! The betrayal!
5. Last one standing wins
Keep going until there’s only one person left who hasn’t been tagged; they’re the winner! (And probably very smug about it.)
Top Tip: Set some ground rules before you start (no pushing, no clothes-grabbing, etc.). It saves the tears and arguments later! Also, parents? You’re absolutely allowed to join in. Just prepare to be absolutely knackered after two rounds.
Sandcastle Competition
Right, is building sandcastles technically a “game”? Maybe not. But add a timer, declare it a COMPETITION, and suddenly everyone’s taking it VERY seriously. This is brilliant fun for kids, and let’s be honest, equally brilliant fun for slightly over-competitive parents who suddenly care A LOT about structural integrity and moat design. No judgment. We’ve all been there.
How to Play:
1. Set the rules
Decide on a time limit (20-30 minutes works well) and what’s allowed. Buckets and spades? Hands only? Driftwood decorations? Seaweed flags? Your game, your rules!
2. Pick your judges
Ideally, someone impartial (so NOT the competitors’ parents!). Maybe rotate judges, or let the youngest decide – they’re usually brutally honest anyway.
3. Build away!
Unleash the creativity! Castles, sea creatures, mermaids, dinosaurs, abstract art – whatever floats their boat (or sandcastle). The brainstorming, the teamwork, the giggles, the inevitable debates about the perfect sand-to-water ratio… It’s all part of the magic.
4. Crown the winner
Judge on creativity, effort, stability, or just “which one makes me smile the most.” There are no wrong answers here!
Top Tips:
- Wet sand near the water’s edge is your friend, way easier to sculpt than dry sand
- Don’t forget the suncream! Even on cloudy days, you’re getting UV. Reapply regularly (yes, even when they moan about it!)
- Take photos BEFORE the tide comes in and destroys your masterpieces!
Beach Sports Day
Who says Sports Day has to be confined to school? Absolutely nobody, that’s who! All you need is a bit of beach space, a willing group of people (bribe them with ice cream if necessary), and a healthy dose of competitive spirit. Bonus: no awkward parents’ race where you pull a hamstring in front of everyone. Unless you WANT that. Your call.
Easy Sports Day Ideas for the Beach:
- 100m Sprint – Mark out a start and finish line in the sand (use seaweed, driftwood, or just draw a line). On your marks, get set, GO! First one there wins bragging rights for the rest of the day.
- Long Jump – Draw a line, take a run-up, LEAP as far as you can. Mark where you land. Repeat until someone inevitably face-plants in the sand (it’s fun, we promise).
- Wheelbarrow Race – One person walks on their hands while another holds their legs. Coordination required. Chaos guaranteed! Absolutely hilarious to watch.
- Three-Legged Race – Tie two people’s legs together (gently!), and watch them attempt to run in sync. Spoiler: they won’t. Cue the giggles and inevitable toppling over.
- Throwing Contests – Think pebble toss, frisbee distance, or “who can throw seaweed the furthest.” (Yes, really. Kids LOVE this.)
Keep it lighthearted! The goal is fun and laughter, not actual Olympic-level competition. Though some parents will inevitably take it there… You know who you are!
Scavenger Hunt
Scavenger hunts are BRILLIANT for breaking up the day, getting everyone moving, and giving the kids a mission (which, let’s be honest, keeps them occupied for a good chunk of time!).
The beauty of this game? You can tailor it to your group, your location, and how much energy you’ve actually got left. Playing with toddlers? Keep it simple. Got competitive tweens? Crank up the difficulty. Want it to last 10 minutes or an hour? Totally up to you!
How to Play:
1. Create your list
Agree on a list of things to find. Tailor it to the beach and your crew! For example:
- Something smooth
- A shell with a hole in it
- Seaweed longer than your arm
- A white pebble
- Something that floats
- A feather
- The perfect skimming stone
You can either have them physically bring items back, OR (if you want to avoid a pile of sandy treasures in your bag) let them take photos as proof!
2. Set boundaries and time limits
Agree on how far they can go and how long they’ve got. Make sure younger kids either pair with, or stay within eyesight of an adult – nobody wants a panicked search party mid-game!
3. Scavenge!
Off they go! Watch them scramble around the beach like little detectives on a mission. It’s adorable. And blissfully quiet for you for a bit.
4. Regroup and crown the winner
Come back together and see who found the most items (or the best versions!). Award prizes if you’re feeling generous, or just dole out high-fives and bragging rights!
Throwing Contests
Let’s be honest, kids LOVE throwing things. Balls, smooth pebbles, sticks, the occasional tantrum… If it can be launched through the air, they’re into it.
Why? Who knows. Maybe it’s the satisfaction of seeing something fly and land with a massive PLOP in the water. Maybe it’s just pure chaos energy. Either way, let’s channel that energy into an actual game! (And we swear we’re not just big kids who also love throwing stuff… Okay, fine, we totally are!)
Option 1: Distance Matters
The Challenge: See who can throw the furthest into the water!
How to Play:
- Everyone lines up at the water’s edge (not IN the water, just near it!)
- Pick your ammunition – smooth pebbles work brilliantly
- On “GO!”, everyone launches their pebble as far as they can
- Furthest throw wins!
Safety Note: Make SURE nobody is swimming nearby before you start launching projectiles into the sea. Common sense, but worth saying! Also, no massive rocks – small, smooth pebbles only please!
Option 2: Accuracy is Best
The Challenge: Hit the target!
How to Play:
- Draw a target in the sand – concentric circles like a dartboard, with a bullseye in the middle
- Everyone gets 3-5 throws (pebbles, shells, whatever you’ve got)
- Closest to the bullseye wins!
- Think curling, but with sand. And significantly less sweeping.
Make It Accessible: Make it harder by standing further back, or easier for little ones by letting them stand closer. Everyone wins when it’s actually achievable!
