DIY Christmas Tree Ornaments

Nothing says family Christmas fun quite like creating your very own ornaments! This crafty little project is perfect for bringing everyone together in the decoration “bubble”. And the best part? You can make it a yearly tradition! Imagine, in a few years’ time, a tree full of handmade memories – each one telling its own festive story.

🎁 What You’ll Need:

  • Clear or simple baubles
  • Glitter (the more, the merrier!)
  • Paint in your favourite festive shades
  • Paint brushes
  • Glue (and maybe an apron… things might get sparkly)

🪄 How to Make Them:

  1. Give your baubles a quick wipe so they’re squeaky clean – no one wants a dusty decoration!
  2. Paint on a base layer of colour – think snowy white, candy-cane red, or frosty blue. Make sure it’s even and smooth (this is your blank canvas for magic).
  3. Let it dry – patience! Test the bottom first so you don’t leave a rogue fingerprint.
  4. Now for the fun part, design time! Use a contrasting paint colour for patterns, or grab the glue and go wild with glitter. Snowflakes, stars, initials… anything goes!
  5. Once everything’s dry, hang your masterpieces on the tree and take a step back. Admire your handiwork, pour yourself a hot chocolate, and bask in the glow of your glittering creations.

Trust us, it’ll be the most wonderful tree of the year!

Salt Dough Decorations

Looking for a craft that’s fun, hands-on, and totally festive? Salt dough decorations are perfect! Make them for your tree, hang them around the house, or even gift them as homemade presents. (Just a heads-up – they look delicious, but they’re not edible!)

🥣 What You’ll Need:

  • 250g plain flour
  • 125g salt
  • 125ml water
  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling pin
  • Festive cookie cutters
  • Knife
  • Baking tray
  • Baking parchment
  • Paint and brushes for the finishing touches

👩🏻‍🍳 How to Make Them:

  1. Preheat your oven to its lowest setting – slow and steady is the key!
  2. Mix the flour, salt, and water together. Don’t be shy, get your hands in and enjoy a little festive mess.
  3. Roll out your dough on a floured surface (flour your rolling pin too!) until it’s nice and flat.
  4. Cut out your shapes with cookie cutters, stars, snowflakes, trees, or get creative and carve your own festive designs with a knife.
  5. Line your baking tray with parchment and place your shapes so they’re not touching.
  6. Pop them in the oven and bake for around 3 hours until firm and solid. Patience is key!
  7. Once cool, it’s time to bring them to life with paint – add sparkles, colours, and personal touches.

Hang them on your tree, tie them with ribbon, or gift them to loved ones – these handmade treasures are guaranteed to spread festive cheer all season long.

Sock Snowmen

Who says snowmen are only for the garden? Bring the winter magic indoors with adorable sock snowmen! These little guys are perfect for using up those lonely odd socks lying around, and making them is just as fun as playing in the snow – without the chill!

🧦 What You’ll Need:

  • White socks (the base of your snowman)
  • Colourful socks (for cute hats)
  • Rice
  • String
  • Buttons
  • Fabric or ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers (for eyes, mouth, or fun features!)

⛄ How to Make Them:

  1. Fill a white sock halfway with rice – this will be the body.
  2. Tie it off with the string just above the rice line.
  3. Fill the rest of the sock with rice to create the head, then tie it off again.
  4. Take the end of a colourful sock, cut it to size, and pop it on your snowman’s head as a festive hat!
  5. Stick on buttons for the belly and use markers to draw eyes, a smile, or even a carrot nose!
  6. Wrap a ribbon or piece of fabric around the neck for a cosy scarf.

And there you have it, a little family of cheerful sock snowmen ready to spread festive fun all around your home! Display them on shelves, your mantel, or even give them as cute homemade gifts.

Pom-Pom Garlands

Add a touch of soft, festive magic to your home with colourful pom-pom garlands! Make fluffy red, white, and green pom-poms and string them together for a cheerful decoration that’ll brighten any room, perfect for trees, mantels, or doorways.

🧵 What You’ll Need:

  • Cardboard
  • Coloured wool – go festive with red, white, and green!
  • Scissors
  • String or wool

🎊 How to Make Them:

  1. Cut two identical circles from cardboard with a hole in the middle, and a slim slice from the edge to the hole.
  2. Stack the circles and start wrapping your wool around them, beginning at the hole and winding around to the outer edge. Keep going until your pom-pom looks delightfully fluffy.
  3. Cut the wool, leaving about 25cm extra at the end.
  4. Carefully separate the circles slightly and cut the wool along the edge between them.
  5. Use the extra wool to tie around the middle, securing your new fluffy creation.
  6. Remove the cardboard and fluff it up – voilà, a perfect pom-pom!
  7. Repeat with different colours and sizes until you have a cheerful collection.
  8. String your pom-poms together in a fun pattern and hang your garland anywhere you want a burst of festive joy!

Your home will instantly feel warmer, cosier, and full of holiday cheer. Bonus: pom-pom garlands are super kid-friendly, so it’s a craft the whole family can enjoy!

Reindeer Handprint Art

This one’s an absolute festive favourite, especially for little ones! Turn your hand into Rudolph himself with this simple and adorable craft. It’s quick, easy, and makes a wonderful keepsake (or even a homemade Christmas card!). Plus, there’s something magical about seeing your tiny handprints turn into a reindeer!

🦌 What You’ll Need:

  • Paper or card
  • Brown paint
  • Googly eyes
  • A red button or pom-pom (Rudolph’s famous nose!)
  • Glue
  • Your hand – the star of the show! 🖐️

🔴 How to Make Them:

  1. Paint the inside of your hand with a generous layer of brown paint: make sure you cover all the gaps so your reindeer isn’t patchy!
  2. Press your painted hand firmly onto the paper, fingers spread wide. Try not to smudge – steady hands!
  3. Carefully lift your hand off and let the paint dry completely. (This is the perfect time for a mince pie break!)
  4. Once dry, glue on the googly eyes and your bright red nose – if you’ve got a spare pom-pom from your garland, it’s perfect for this!
  5. Add a smile, maybe a few snowflakes around the edge, and admire your adorable handmade Rudolph.

These handprint reindeer make brilliant Christmas decorations, cards, or gifts for grandparents, and they’re a lovely way to capture those little hands before they grow!

The best part about Christmas crafting isn’t just the end result – it’s the moments in between. The giggles when someone accidentally glues their fingers together, the proud smiles when your little ones hang their creations on the tree, and the memories you’ll unwrap year after year.

So pop on the Christmas tunes, make a hot chocolate (extra marshmallows, of course!), and get creative. Whether you’re crafting for fun, decoration, or gifting, your handmade touches will make the season that much more magical.

Now go on, get crafting, get Christmassy, and let your imagination sparkle brighter than the star on top of the tree!
