Touring Packing List: The Ultimate Guide for a Stress-Free Getaway

Touring Packing List: The Ultimate Guide for a Stress-Free Getaway

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, touring is “the activity of visiting several places in a country or area for pleasure”, and we couldn’t agree more! There’s something truly special about hitting the open road, soaking up the scenery, and discovering hidden gems along the way. Whether you’re off on a weekend road trip or a full-blown cross-country adventure, touring is all about freedom, exploration, and making unforgettable memories. That said, a smooth touring holiday starts with smart prep, and that’s where we come in with our touring packing list!

This guide is here to help you feel organised, confident, and ready to make the most of every mile. From practical must-haves to those little extras that make your trip more comfortable, we’ve covered all the essentials (and then some!). After all, touring should be about relaxing, enjoying the journey, and soaking up the beauty of your surroundings – not stressing over what you might’ve left behind.

So, whether you’re an experienced tourer or planning your very first trip, we’re here to help you hit the road with everything you need.

Fuel up, buckle in, and let’s get you tour-ready!

Touring Essentials

These are the core items you’ll want packed and ready before hitting the road – think of them as your non-negotiables for a smooth and comfortable trip.

Bedding
Even if your tourer has a cosy setup, don’t forget duvets, pillows, and extra blankets, especially if you’re travelling outside the summer months. A good night’s sleep makes all the difference!

Kitchen Supplies
From pots and pans to a kettle and chopping board, having the right cooking gear means you can whip up meals anytime you want. Don’t forget dishcloths, washing-up liquid, and a tea towel or two. Don’t want to cook? Visit our on-site restaurant – Oceans Bar & Restaurant!

Cleaning Items
Wipes, surface spray, a dustpan and brush – keeping your space tidy is much easier when you’ve got a few cleaning essentials onboard.

First Aid Kit
Better safe than sorry! Include plasters, antiseptics, painkillers and any personal medication. Accidents happen, but being prepared helps you handle them with ease.

Electrical Hook-Up Lead
An absolute must! Make sure it’s long enough for easy access and meets safety regulations. Read about our fair use policy here.

Water Pump
Essential for accessing your onboard water supply. Without it, your taps won’t work, so don’t leave it behind!

Waste Water Container
Do we really need to go into this one? It’s necessary… trust us!

Toilet Chemicals
Keep things fresh (and functional) with the right chemicals for your portable loo.

Cutlery
It’s easy to forget, but no one wants to eat dinner with their hands. Pack a full set, including teaspoons and serving utensils.

Towing Mirrors
These aren’t something you pack in your van, but they are a legal requirement if your tourer is wider than your vehicle. They also make towing much safer!

Toilet Roll!
Trust us – this one’s worth the reminder. And go for the type that’s safe for chemical toilets to avoid blockages.

A happy family on their touring holiday

Holiday Essentials

Once your tourer is fully stocked and ready to roll, it’s time to turn your attention to the personal items that’ll keep you comfortable, relaxed, and ready for anything while you’re away. Whether you’re planning on lounging by the beach, exploring the countryside, or simply unwinding on site, a bit of prep can make all the difference.

Clothing & Footwear

Touring holidays often mean changeable plans – and changeable weather! Packing a mix of clothing ensures you’re ready for sunshine, rain, or a chilly evening under the stars.

  • Day-to-day clothing – Comfortable outfits that suit both lounging and exploring. Think t-shirts, shorts, leggings or joggers.
  • Warm layers – A hoodie or fleece is perfect for cooler evenings, especially if you’re sitting outside watching the sun set.
  • Waterproof jacket – Even if the forecast looks dry, a lightweight waterproof jacket will be your best friend if the weather turns.
  • Comfy shoes – Whether it’s trainers for walks or wellies for muddy mornings, having the right footwear makes all the difference.
  • Swimwear – If you’re heading to the beach, or even fancy dipping into our on-site pools, don’t forget your swim gear.
  • Sleepwear – Make sure it’s warm enough; it can get surprisingly cool at night in a caravan or motorhome.
  • Sun protection – Sunglasses, a sun hat and breathable cover-ups help protect against strong UV rays, especially in summer.

Toiletries & Personal Care

Staying fresh on the road is easy with a few go-to essentials. Keep your washbag well-stocked so you don’t need to rush to the shops on arrival. However, if you do forget something, we have an on-site convenience store!

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Shower gel or soap
  • Shampoo & conditioner
  • Deodorant
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Razor & shaving cream
  • Moisturiser & skincare items
  • Lip balm (great in both sunny and windy weather)
  • Hand sanitiser & tissues
  • Sun cream – even on cloudy days!
  • After-sun lotion (just in case)
  • Sanitary products

Top tip: If you’re short on space, try travel-sized bottles or switch to solid products like shampoo bars – less mess, more room.

Towels (Beach & Bath)

You’ll definitely want a couple of towels – one for showering and one for swimming or beach trips. Microfibre towels are compact, quick-drying, and ideal for packing light.

  • Bath towels – For daily use and drying off after showers.
  • Beach towels – Great for lounging at the beach or poolside.
  • Spare towel or foot mat – Especially handy for drying off pets or muddy feet before stepping back inside the van.

Extras to Make Your Touring Holiday Even Better

Once the essentials are packed, it’s time to think about those added extras that can make your touring getaway even more enjoyable. While not strictly necessary, these thoughtful additions can boost comfort, help you stay organised, and add a bit of fun to your trip, especially when you’re spending a few days (or more!) on the road.

Comfort & Convenience

A little extra comfort goes a long way when touring, especially after a full day of exploring.

  • Camping chairs & table – Create a relaxing outdoor setup for meals, drinks, or simply enjoying the South Devon view.
  • Picnic blanket – Great for beach visits, grassy parks, or roadside breaks with a snack.
  • Hammock – If you’ve got the space and trees nearby, it’s a fun way to unwind (or attempt to get in without falling!).
  • Windbreak – Adds a little privacy to your pitch and helps shield you from those seaside breezes.
  • Hot water bottle – Ideal for cooler nights in the van or awning.
  • Collapsible storage – Keep things neat and easy to access with foldable crates or hanging organisers.
  • Battery-powered lanterns or fairy lights – Practical and adds a cosy vibe to your evenings outdoors.

Fun & Entertainment

Whether you’re touring with family, friends or solo, it’s always nice to have some light entertainment ready for downtime.

  • Board games or cards – Easy to pack and perfect for rainy afternoons or evenings indoors.
  • Books or e-readers – Nothing beats reading with a view (or while it’s raining outside).
  • Outdoor games – Think frisbee, rounders, or a football for a bit of active fun on site.
  • Binoculars – Spot wildlife, enjoy the coastal views, or just have a nose around!
  • Notebook or sketchpad – Great for jotting down memories or getting creative on the go.

Practical Must-Haves

Being prepared for little mishaps or unexpected weather can save you a lot of hassle on a touring trip.

  • Basic toolkit – Screwdriver, spanner, cable ties, just enough for minor fixes.
  • Duct tape – A go-to solution for temporary repairs (you’ll thank us later).
  • Spare batteries & chargers – Keep your gadgets and torches running.
  • Cleaning brush – Handy for muddy shoes, sandy feet, or cleaning down gear.
  • Multi-tool or penknife – Practical and space-saving for day-to-day tasks.
  • Umbrella or poncho – For sudden showers (or shade on a sunny day).
  • Reusable shopping bags – Great for day trips or food shops.

  • Toys – To help them settle in and feel at home.
  • Poo bags – please keep the site clean!

  • Dog bed or blanket – A familiar spot for them to snooze.
  • Collar light – A great little tool for evening walks or low-light mornings.

Final Touring Packing Tips

✔ Do a Pre-Departure Check

Before you hit the road, double-check that everything is secure and in working order. Make sure cupboards are latched, windows are closed, the gas is off, and your towing gear is fitted correctly. A quick once-over can save you a world of trouble later.

✔ Arrive in Daylight (if you can!)

Setting up your pitch in daylight is far easier than doing it in the dark. You’ll have more visibility, and it’s a lot less stressful when navigating unfamiliar sites or connecting your hook-up. Check-in time is 11 am, so you practically have all day!

✔ Pack for Easy Access

Store frequently used items in easy-to-reach spots. You don’t want to be unpacking half the van just to find your kettle or waterproof coat. Trust us, this little bit of planning goes a long way!

✔ Leave a Little Wiggle Room

You don’t need to pack everything. Touring is all about keeping things simple, so allow some space for spontaneous finds and souvenirs along the way. Plus, it makes repacking much easier.

Ready to Tour in Style?

Touring offers the perfect mix of freedom, flexibility, and fresh-air adventure. With the right preparation, it’s one of the most rewarding ways to holiday. Whether you’re pitching up for a weekend escape or setting out on an extended road trip, having a solid packing plan means you can relax and enjoy the journey.
