8 Family-Friendly Halloween Activities in South Devon

8 Family-Friendly Halloween Activities in South Devon

The spookiest time of year is creeping closer! Halloween is a bit like Marmite – you either love it or could happily do without it. But when you’ve got little ones, it’s hard to resist getting involved when there are costumes to wear, pumpkins to carve and plenty of spooky fun to be had. And let’s be honest, you don’t need to go all-out with elaborate decorations and Pinterest-worthy costumes to make Halloween memorable. Sometimes, the simplest activities are the ones the whole family enjoys most.

That’s why we’ve put together 8 family-friendly Halloween activities in and around South Devon, along with some fun ideas you can enjoy right from the comfort of your own home. Whether you’re looking for a spooky day out, something to keep the kids entertained on a rainy autumn afternoon or an easy activity for the whole family to enjoy together, we’ve got you covered.

So, grab your pumpkin spice latte, dig out the Halloween decorations and let’s get our spooky on!

Spooky Things to Do in South Devon

When it comes to Halloween in South Devon, there’s so much going on that narrowing it down to just four activities was no easy task! From pumpkin patches and spooky events to autumn adventures, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

Pick Your Perfect Pumpkin

If we could get an aerial view of South Devon in October, we’re pretty sure we’d see little splashes of orange dotted all over the countryside! Pumpkin patches are a brilliant way to embrace the season, and they’re a great activity for the whole family.

Some offer much more than just pumpkin picking. Pennywell Farm’s Pumpkin Nights, for example, combine pumpkins with live music, food and drink and play areas, making for a full evening. At Dawlish Pumpkin Patch, the focus is firmly on those wonderfully bright orange gourds, with refreshments available while you hunt for the perfect pumpkin.

And, of course, there’s nothing quite like letting the kids loose among the pumpkins and watching them debate exactly which one is coming home with you!

Pumpkin Patches Near Lady’s Mile

If you’re staying at Lady’s Mile, here are some pumpkin-picking options to look out for:

Whether you’re searching for the biggest pumpkin, the funniest shape, or simply one that feels right, pumpkin picking is a wonderfully autumnal way to spend a day together.

Top tip: Dates, opening times and activities can change, so make sure you check each pumpkin patch’s website before setting off to avoid disappointment.

Babbacombe Model Village

26th – 31st October 2026

Halloween fun doesn’t always have to be big and scary; sometimes, it’s even better when it’s miniature! And Babbacombe Model Village is bringing some spooky seasonal fun to its tiny world this Halloween.

From spooky illuminations lighting up the village to the ‘Behind the Screams’ trail, there’s plenty for the family to discover as you explore the miniature scenes. Keep your eyes peeled, too, for the miniature pumpkin hunt – can you find them all?

And the Halloween fun doesn’t stop there! Your ticket also includes a round of 9-hole crazy golf, giving you another chance to get competitive with the family. There’s something quite brilliant about squeezing so much family fun into one little attraction. Who says Halloween has to be terrifying to be a great day out?

Have a Spooky Seaside Photo Challenge

Okay, this one isn’t technically exclusive to South Devon, but when you’ve got miles of coastline, autumn scenery and plenty of interesting places to explore, it’s too good not to include!

A spooky photo challenge is an easy way to turn an ordinary family walk into a mini Halloween adventure. Best of all, you can make it as simple or competitive as you like depending on the age of your little ones.

Here’s how it works: make a list of spooky things to find, set a time limit and head out to see who can capture the best photos! You could even split into teams and award points for the funniest, spookiest or most creative photos.

Not sure what to look for? Try these:

  • The spookiest-looking tree
  • The best Halloween-decorated house
  • The most haunted-looking place
  • The biggest spider web
  • The creepiest autumn leaf
  • A spooky-looking stretch of coastline
  • Something that looks like a Halloween creature
  • The most mysterious-looking building

You don’t even need to go far – Dawlish Warren and the surrounding South Devon coastline could provide plenty of inspiration! And remember, the aim is to have fun, not to actually end up in a horror film! Keep little ones supervised, stick to safe paths and public areas, and make sure everyone stays together while you’re exploring.

Who knows? You might even discover a few spooky sights you’d normally walk straight past!

Halloween Fun Without Leaving the Park

We’ve put together a few easy, family-friendly Halloween ideas that can be adapted to whatever space you have, so you can enjoy a day filled with games, treats and plenty of laughs without even leaving the park!

From getting creative with spooky crafts to settling down for a Halloween film, there’s something for everyone. All you need is a little imagination, a few supplies and your favourite people.

Halloween Party

You don’t need an elaborate event or a house covered in cobwebs to have a brilliant Halloween party. Whether you’re inviting the whole gang or keeping it to a small family-only celebration, a few spooky games, some Halloween treats, and the people you love are all you really need!

Here are a few easy activities that are guaranteed to get everyone involved:

Dress the Mummy

Grab a few rolls of toilet paper and split into teams. One person becomes the ‘mummy’ while everyone else races to wrap them from head to toe. Fastest fully wrapped mummy wins!

Apple Bobbing

A Halloween classic! Fill a bowl with water, add some apples and see who can grab one using only their mouth. Just be prepared for a few very wet faces!

Spooky Charades

Put a Halloween twist on a family favourite. Write down spooky films, monsters, characters or Halloween-themed activities and take turns acting them out. No talking – just plenty of dramatic performances!

Add Your Own Challenges

Want to make things even more competitive? Give out prizes for the best mummy, funniest charade or most dramatic performance. They don’t have to be anything fancy; even a bag of Halloween sweets will do!

The best part? You don’t need to spend a fortune to make it memorable. Put on some spooky music, add a few decorations and let the games do the rest!

Spooky Creations

If you’re looking for a fun way to keep the kids entertained, get creative this Halloween! Arts and crafts and baking are perfect for a cosy afternoon, and the best part is, you get something to show for it at the end.

From spooky decorations and creepy crafts to Halloween bakes that are almost too good to eat, there are plenty of ways to get the whole family involved.

Need some inspiration? We’ve put together a whole blog packed with Halloween crafts and baking ideas to help make your celebrations extra creative.

Make it extra special with cosy blankets, Halloween-themed snacks and some spooky decorations. Then all that’s left to do is argue over who gets to choose the film!

Very big pitch. Plenty of room for my little camper and awning. Lovely clean shower block but could do with a few more for size of site. Fun pool with slide. Plenty of sunbeds. Restaurant, takeaway, small shop. All very reasonable priced. 20 minute easy walk to beach, funfair and pubs etc. Walk up hill more challenging on return but not life threatening. Went in june so not crowded as I prefer and weather was amazing. Easy, level, coastal walk around to dawlish town.

We originally booked a caravan for our stay. As a family, we’ve usually stayed at Haven and Parkdean sites, but this year we wanted to try somewhere different — and we’re so glad we did! When we arrived, we realised that caravans can differ quite a lot in size, and unfortunately the one we had booked wasn’t quite suitable for my disability and individual needs. I went to reception and was greeted by Holly, who was a supervisor and absolutely lovely. She couldn’t have been more helpful. After I explained the difficulties I was having, both my husband and I felt that she really went above and beyond to help us find a solution. Luckily, Holly was able to offer us two alternative accommodation options, one of which was an upgrade at an additional cost. We went to have a look at both and decided to pay for the upgrade as we were fortunate enough to be in a position to do so. We ended up in a beautiful lodge with a jacuzzi, which was absolutely perfect for us and made such a difference to our holiday. We also learnt something from the experience ourselves — because of my disability and our family’s individual needs, in future we’ll phone and book directly so we can discuss exactly what we need and make sure we choose the most suitable accommodation. A huge thank you to Holly for being so understanding, kind and helpful. What could have been a difficult start to our holiday was handled brilliantly. ❤️
